Help Preserve Our History while Investing in the Future! What is the Allegany Museum? It’s a place that tells a story. A story of the United States, our local community, and YOU. From special exhibitions to permanent collections, the Museum reflects our shared history in this unique slice of Maryland. The rich history of Allegany County can be found right here. We have so much to be proud of – and you have the opportunity to help preserve our past while investing in our future.
We need your help to continue to tell our story. With your support, we can achieve our goals of gaining accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums and becoming an official Smithsonian Affiliate. Reaching these goals will enable us to bring even more high-quality exhibitions such as “Crossroads: Change in Rural America” to our community.
The timing couldn’t be better. Since the Allegany Museum open at 3 Pershing Street in 2010, local tourism has increased 17%, resulting in a $32 million economic stimulus to our local economy. The Museum has played and continues to play a large role in this growth, and all of this work has been done by our generous volunteers.
To take the next step toward becoming a major attraction in our growing Heritage Tourism industry, we are establishing an Endowment Fund to hire professional staff. This, in turn, will qualify the Allegany Museum to apply for the American Alliance of Museums accreditation, which will then enable us to apply to become a Smithsonian Institute Affiliate. This means more high-quality exhibitions and presentations for our community, all straight from the resources of the prominent Smithsonian Institution.
How can you help? Our goal is to raise $2 million by the year 2020 and your generous support is vital to our continued growth and success. Please consider supporting our mission and, in turn, investing in our community. Help us preserve and grow our shared history!
Allegany Museum collects the material culture of the people, past and present, of Allegany County and its close neighbors in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Our institution maintains and preserves these items for the benefit of present and future generations. We look for objects, ordinary and extraordinary, whose stories and meanings are rich and complex, have inherent worth, both reflect and challenge the conventional wisdom, and invite us to look deeper or broader. These objects and their documented contexts illuminate and interpret the larger themes of our history. Our collections form the foundation for research, scholarship, exhibitions, public programs, and outreach.
The Allegany Museum is a registered 501(c) and all donations are tax deductible. If you are interested in donating an item to the Allegany Museum please contact us.
Please note that as of October 1, 2014, Allegany Museum will no longer accept spontaneous drop-off donations. Please request a consultation with a staff member, which will include completion of a donor form prior to bring your items to the museum.

You don’t have to be an historian to play an important role on the Allegany Museum team. You’ll find that sharing your time and talent as a volunteer is as rewarding as it is fun. Learn local history, meet new people, and help to celebrate the rich history of our local region. Host/Hostess Volunteers greet visitors when they come into the museum and make them feel welcome. Hosts/hostesses are not expected to give tours or be an expert in local history. Exhibits are self-explanatory and visitors usually prefer to explore on their own.
We regularly are in need of volunteers to help with various exhibits, the Whiskey Rebellion Fest, and for many other specific projects. Like the Allegany Museum Facebook Page and keep in touch with the blog on our website for further opportunities.
